Guide for Cleaning Data in Excel 2007
When you import data from an external source, you may want to clean it before you analyze it. Follow the guide below to ensure a clean spreadsheet:
- Create a backup copy of the original data in a separate workbook after it has been imported.
- To remove duplicate rows, go to the Data tab, then the Data Tools group, and select the Remove Duplicates command. If you want to filter for duplicates or unique values first, go to the Home tab and use the Conditional Formatting command in the Style group.
- To convert numbers imported as text back into numbers, click the Microsoft button, and click the Excel Options button. In the Formulas tab, check the Enable background checking box under Error Checking and the Numbers formatted as text or preceded by an apostrophe box under Error checking rules. Go to the worksheet and select adjacent cells with an error indicator at the corner, click on the error button that appears, and select Convert to Number.
