Evaluating Excel Formulas

Does Excel calculate your formulas the way you want? Excel always calculates percentages first, followed by exponents, and then it calculates multiplication and division before doing addition and subtraction.

If your formula is =7+5*3, Excel calculates that as 22, not 36. To force Excel to calculate against its standard, enclose those you want calculated first in parentheses: =(7+5)*3 will now give you 36. You can evaluate how Excel is calculating your formula by following these steps:

  1. Click on the cell with the formula.
  2. Select Tools | Formula Auditing | Evaluate Formula.
  3. Click on Evaluate and watch as each part of the formula is successively calculated
